In
lieu of
RECOPE´s 50th
anniversary it is necessary to list a
number of items and events that
occurred during its existence as
they relevant to the country´s
development.
Since RECOPE was created it
has promoted the transmission
of technology and education.
A
fundamental
contribution
associated with its creation
concerns the opening of careers
in
chemical,
electrical
and
mechanical engineering at the
University of Costa Rica (who
prepared the professionals that
became responsible for the
refinery´s
operation.
Foreign
teachers were brought to the
country, laboratories were created
and scholarships were offered to
students who wanted to pursue
these careers.
Throughout its history, it has
managed to develop the best
and only system of pipelines in
the region; a system that stands
out for being the most efficient,
economical and environmentally
friendly overland transport of
hydrocarbons.
The nationalization in 1976,
handed local entrepreneurs the
responsibility over transportation
and retail distribution at services
stations, thus generating a strong
niche in the value chain.
In 1976 RECOPE financed the
construction of docks in Moin,
to be used for banana and oil
commerce.
Nowadays
these
docks aid our main exports and
have allowed the unloading of
oil in a safe manner. RECOPE´s
initial initiative was to build a
wharf to import crude oil and its
derivatives, but the National Port
Development Plan extended the
objectives so that Moin would
become a multipurpose port,
allowing cargo operations for
banana, fertilizer, various fruits
and fuels, among other products.
The project was executed by
NASEVI and initiated service in
1981.
Over time, the launch of the
Moin dock (along with other
docks mentioned previously) has
become an important commercial
and economic support for the
province of Limon and the
country.
The importation structure of
RECOPE has been recognized
internationally by CEPAL for
achieving the best import prices.
Thanks to the unique distribution
system
in
Central
America.
RECOPE also flaunts leadership in;
the development of cleaner fuels,
research on clean and renewable
energy sources and assuring the
security of supply. It is the first
company within Central America
to; eliminate Tetra ethyl lead
(1996), oxygenate super gasoline
(1995), lower the concentrations
of sulfur in diesel to 50 ppm
(2011) and to introduce bio-fuel
mixtures.
Costa Ricans can attest that
throughout its history, RECOPE
has been efficient and responsible
in its duties regarding importing,
refining and distributing the fuel
that the country has required for
the entire Motor Pool (via sales
to more than 300 service stations
located throughout) and for the
countries energy production at
the various plants developed by:
the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE), the industrial
sector, the trade sector, relief
agencies and hospital systems.
