meters deep. The river had to be diverted
to dig the trench and install the pipes.
Construction of protection
structures in the Bartolo River
In order to reduce the risk of flooding,
to protect the structural integrity of the
facilities, to prevent soil erosion, and
to lessen the effects on the parking
areas and the water catchment system
at the Moín Terminals, a number
of hydrological, topographical and
geotechnical studies were conducted
in the interest of designing civil
engineering works that are capable of
controlling the flow rate and, therefore,
mitigate the risk of flooding; especially
given that, during the rainy season, the
flow rate of the Bartolo River reaches
dangerous levels.
These
civil
engineering
works
were devised by a third party, DBR
y ASOCIADOS, and consisted in
rectifying the streambed of the Bartolo
River, reinforcing the soil slopes with
gabion mattresses, reinforcing the
ground with concrete, constructing a
dam (and the respective pluvial water
conduction pipes) on the Bartolo River,
and expanding the culvert, in addition to
a number of other minor works.
