2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Gasoline is the most commonly used
fuel in the transportation industry,
particularly in the private sector.
Reported sales increased by 15% in
2016, mainly due to the following
three factors: the rise in the number of
vehicles in circulation; the fall in the
rate of inflation – which plummeted
to practically zero; and the drop in the
average price of gasoline, given that it
reached a 6-year low.
Upon further analysis of the reported
sales of Premium Gasoline and Plus
91, the impact caused by the product
substitution – which took place over
the past few years and accelerated the
rate of consumption of the former in
relation to the latter – became apparent.
This situation came about, among other
reasons, due to the modernization of
the country’s vehicle population, and
the relatively low price of Premium
Gasoline, which remained unchanged
all year round.
Diesel 50 sales in 2016 increased by
6.3% in relation to 2015. Being as how
diesel is one of the most commonly
used fuels in the transportation sector,
it is consistently one of the products
with the greatest demand. Diesel sales
are frequently considered one of the
many country economic development
indicators, given that the rate of diesel
consumption is typically directly related
to the transport of import and export
goods, and to passenger transportation
(public transportation and privately-
owned vehicles).
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sales
in 2016 increased by 9.5% in relation
to 2015. LPG is considered one of the
cleaner fuels in terms of emissions.
As such, product substitution efforts –
seeking to replace bunker with LPG in
production processes nationwide – and
considerable investments have been
made by the national oil industry in
furtherance of a cleaner tomorrow. LPG
is one of the most commonly used fuels
in the food and tourism industry, and
in Costa Rican households, especially
in hard-to-reach remote areas. LPG is
most often used in hospitals, school
cafeterias and in prisons and jails,
among others.
Jet A-1 fuel sales in 2016 increased by
11.7% in relation to 2015, mainly due
to a significant increase in the number
